Text according to Lampsidis 1996 1
About this edition:
This bilingual and fully annotated edition was prepared as part of the Early Stage Project "Die MANASSES-Chronik - Maschinelle ANnotation zur Analyse Sprachlicher Strukturen Einer Slawischen Chronik", conducted by Dr. Fabio Maion from July 2024 until December 2024. The project was funded by the Vice Rector for Research of the University of Innsbruck.
The Slavonic text is based on the edition by Dujčev et al. (1988), which reproduces the text of Synodal 38 preserved in the State Historical Museum in Moscow. Only in a small number of passages do the other two surviving Middle Bulgarian manuscripts preserve better readings; these have been incorporated into the present edition. The sources of the incorporations are indicated in the footnotes. The punctuation does not reproduce that of the original manuscript but follows the modernized punctuation introduced by the editors.
The Greek text is based on the critical edition by Lampsidis (1996). Since the aim of the present edition is to align the Greek and Slavonic texts as closely as possible, several deviations from Lampsidis’s edition have been introduced. First, verses that were not translated into Slavonic have been omitted. Second, whenever one or more Greek manuscripts preserve variant readings that correspond more closely to the Slavonic translation than the reconstructed text adopted by Lampsidis, these variants have been preferred. Such deviations are likewise documented in the footnotes.
The text presented here covers the chronicle from its beginning up to the capture of Troy. As the Slavonic translation constitutes the primary focus of this digital edition, the verse numbering follows the translation rather than the Greek original. Consequently, the numbering may differ from that found in Lampsidis (1996). Although counting Slavonic verses may appear somewhat artificial, given that the original metre is not preserved in the translation, this approach provides a clearer overview of the extent to which the text was translated into Slavonic.
